Kevin Leonard, a champion for patient engagement

The report, Patient Engagement Project: Mount Dennis Community, was one of Kevin Leonard's final works for Patient Destiny.

Kevin Leonard, founder of Patient Destiny, was in the vanguard of the patient movement in Ontario. Patient Destiny advocated for easy patient access to their records as the first and most important step in patient engagement.

This report on the care of the disadvantaged in Toronto is his last major effort before he died in July of 2013. We think it is a critical piece that captures his commitment, his intelligence and his deep understanding of the inequities in our current healthcare system. A must read for all of us dedicated to the patient voice.

Thinking about patient engagement

SUMMARY: More and more we hear the term 'patient engagement' but what is patient engagement anyway? Leslie Kernisan, MD, MPH, has an interesting take on meaningful patient engagement.

We would like to know what you think patient engagement is. Does this definition match yours? Add your comments below. The article contends that without properly defining what patient engagement is, engagement strategies run the risk of becoming another way to 'tell patients what to do, and help them do it.' Kernisan feels true engagement is more than working together to achieve a health outcome. It is also working together to decide what outcomes to work for.

The article also goes on to examine how to measure patient engagement and gives some examples.
