The education of surgeons has not traditionally emphasized patient-centred practices. As a result, many surgeons have not learned how to communicate well with patients and families. And now new surgeons are entering a healthcare industry that is increasingly driven by patient feedback.

The patient voice and the patient experience are beginning to impact how physicians deliver services.

In a feature, Patient feedback makes us better surgeons,  published by the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Meera Gupta lists social media and publicly-reported surveys as two examples of how patients are comparing and evaluating their surgeons – and changing the delivery of health care.
